I recently became involved with Letter Against Isolation. It is a volunteer organization run by young women who are trying to combat the isolation seniors are going through right now. Let’s face it, many seniors were isolated long before we had a pandemic. They organize through a spreadsheet, the distribution of letters to seniors’ centres in various countries including Canada, USA, UK, and Australia. Once you sign up to be a volunteer, you will receive an ID number. Simply write a bunch of cards or letters to a random senior and when you have some ready to go, go onto the spreadsheet and sign up for a location to send them. You can send them all to one place or spread it out to various locations.
They prefer uplifting cards and messages in your own handwriting that can be distributed to anyone. All of the rules or dos and don’ts are on the website. They also provide a lot of tips for what to write to someone you don’t know. Decorating the envelope is highly encouraged.
This is a great thing to do with your friends or kids on an afternoon when you can enjoy spreading a little kindness to someone who will appreciate the gesture. So get out there and send some snail mail to an anonymous new friend. I cannot think of a better bonding experience than working together to share joy.
